Noninvasive, Real-Time Monitoring of Oxygen and pH During E. coli Fermentation Using Optical Sensors
نویسندگان
چکیده
monitoring biological parameters in bioreactor environments, we placed oxygenand pH-sensitive adhesive patches inside a bioflask to monitor conditions during an E. coli fermentation reaction. Bioreactors are closed-environment systems where the cells are cultured under specific conditions to synthesize the final product. Such systems require constant monitoring of DO and pH to optimize the bioprocesses. Optical sensors were used to provide oxygen and pH measurements in the liquid phase of the bioreactor. Advances in sensor materials and optoelectronics have enabled novel optical sensors for applications in life sciences, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and more. Compared with electrochemical sensing techniques such as galvanic sensors, optical sensors can be made in small and customizable form factors, allow non-intrusive measurements and do not consume the sample.

Shake flasks are commonly used for process development in biotechnologyindustry. For this purpose a lot of information is required from the growth conditions duringthe fermentation experiments. Therefore, Anderlei et al. developed the RAMOS technology[1, 2], which proviedes on-line oxygen and carbondioxide transfer rates in shake flasks.Besides oxygen consumption, the pH in the medium also play...
متن کاملDetection of Fuel Adulteration in Real Time Using Optical Fiber Sensor and Peripheral Interface Controller
Detection of fuel adulteration in real time is the most important need of the world as it generates the hazardous effects on the environment, living and nonliving things. Various automotive users and fuel providers may mix kerosene in petrol and diesel. Adulterated fuel increases air pollution, as well as reduces the performance of vehicle engines. Such a malpractice in fuel is prevailing becau...

The chemical species of principal clinical interest for continuous monitoring include oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, potassium, and glucose. Although sensors exist for all of these analytes, relatively few continuous monitors are used for blood chemistries. Reviewing the available electrochemical and optical approaches along with the expected system performance requirements provides some insight i...
متن کاملOn-line, real-time measurements of cellular biomass using dielectric spectroscopy.
Introduction All else being equal, the productivity of a biological process is determined by the quantity of biomass present. There is therefore a major requirement for the accurate measurement and control of the biomass within fermentors, at both laboratory and industrial scales. Presently the range of sensors available that can be used in situ and reliably for the monitoring and regulation of...
